Courtship and Nesting Rituals
Snapping turtle reproduction starts in the late spring or early summer when water temperatures begin to stabilize. Mating typically occurs in shallow waters where the male grips the female's carapace using specialized, curved claws on his front feet. This process can last for several hours, ensuring successful fertilization of the clutch.
After mating, the female embarks on a crucial journey ashore. Leaving the safety of the water, she travels overland, often covering significant distances to find a suitable nesting site. She seeks out well-drained soil, such as sandy banks or loose gravel, where she can dig a flask-shaped nest cavity using her powerful hind legs.
Egg Development and Vulnerability
Once the nest is prepared, the female deposits a clutch of roughly 20 to 50 spherical, leathery eggs. She then carefully covers the clutch with soil and camouflages the site with surrounding vegetation to obscure it from predators. This maternal care, though brief, is vital for the initial survival of the offspring.
Incubation period lasts approximately 55 to 75 days, heavily influenced by soil temperature.
Warmer temperatures tend to produce more males, while cooler conditions result in females.
