Understanding the Pocket Door System
Before you begin the installation, it is essential to understand how the hardware works together. A standard pocket door system consists of the door itself, a top track, and a series of guides and hangers mounted on the backside of the door. The top track is fixed to the header of the opening and supports the weight of the door, while the vertical door guides ensure the panel remains centered within the pocket wall cavity and prevent it from swinging outward. These guides are typically located at the top and bottom of the door or integrated into the top track assembly, and they are what keep the door running straight and true.
Preparing the Door and Frame
Proper preparation is the foundation of a successful installation, and it begins with the door itself. You must ensure the edge of the door where the hardware is mounted is perfectly straight and free of old adhesive or paint. If you are installing a pre-hung pocket door, the manufacturer has already drilled the holes for the hangers, which simplifies the process significantly. For existing solid doors, you will need to use a template provided with your kit to mark the precise locations for the door guides and top lock set. Accurate marking here prevents the need for difficult adjustments later on.

Installing the Top Track

Once the track is secured, you will insert the roller car into the track and attach the door hanger to the bottom of the door, connecting it to the car before raising the assembly into the pocket.
Mounting the Door Guides
This is the step where precision becomes visible in the final product. The door guides prevent the door from moving sideways out of the pocket, and they must be aligned perfectly with the center of the door and the track. For the vertical guides, you will typically attach one to the top edge of the door near the hinge side and another to the bottom edge on the same side. These guides should sit flush against the door face without binding. When you slide the door into the pocket, these guides will engage with the strikes mounted on the wall framing, keeping the door centered.
Adjusting for Perfect Alignment
Do not expect the door to work perfectly the first time; adjustment is a standard part of the process. If the door scrapes the floor, you may need to adjust the height of the bottom guide or the roller car. If the door drifts out of the pocket, the vertical guides require fine-tuning. Most modern kits feature adjustable components that allow you to tweak the tension and alignment with a simple screwdriver. Test the door thoroughly, making small incremental adjustments until it slides smoothly from one end of the pocket to the other without resistance.
